The Lede
As a middle-aged man, sometimes it’s helpful to remember what you’ve forgotten about being your kid’s age, or at least in their stage of life. This idea really struck home to me watching American Graffiti, because I remember that time of life when everything is changing and it seems like the ground is constantly shifting beneath your feet.
I remember being the guy who stayed in the home town while friends moved away. I remember moving away while other people stayed home. I remember thinking that everything I knew about life was changing constantly, and I remember not liking that feeling at all.
I say I remember these things, but to tell you the truth, I had forgotten them. My oldest child just hit the teenage years so he’s not really there yet, but it was good for me to have a reminder of some things I’ve forgotten. The teenage years and early twenties are full of so much turmoil, it’s easy to hit your forties and forget what it was like to realize that next week on the drag it’s just going to be you because your friends won’t be there.
It’s good to remember what it was like, even if for the dads of the Bad Dads Podcast it involved something as fossilized as going out on the drag.
Episode 2 Preview | Dave Talks Plotting
Episode 2 of Season 3 releases next week and it’s all about that little slice of cinema Americana, American Graffiti. The plot of the movie is…well, let’s just let Dave tell you about the plot.
An American Graffiti Playlist
Whatever you think of the movie and it’s plot, or lack thereof, one thing I think most of us can agree on is that the soundtrack to American Graffiti is superb. Actually, I forgot it’s 2024 and we can’t agree on anything, but give it a listen and see how you feel after the fact.
