The Lede

Nostalgia, like many things in life, can be good or bad. When it’s good, nostalgia gives us a healthy appreciation for what came before us, and can make us more observant of the good and bad in our world today.

This is on my mind because American Graffiti was such a nostalgic movie. If you’ve never seen the movie that might be news, but if you’ve even the first ten minutes of the film, you know exactly what I’m talking about. American Graffiti was essentially George Lucas’s love letter to his formative years, and there isn’t anything wrong with that, at least not intrinsically.

My kids will grow up in a world far different from the one of my childhood. And I don’t think I do them (or me) any favors by spending my time bemoaning the passing of the good old days when we used rotary phones, couldn’t pause the TV, and had to get our information from the newspaper.1

Was the world better when as a teenager you went “out on the drag” instead of staying at home staring on a screen? You know what, I kind of doubt it. Parts of it were better, and parts of it were worse. There were lots of challenges then, just like there are now.

Just don’t tell George Lucas. If you make him mad he might find a way to go back in time and not make Star Wars, and that would ruin my childhood.

Episode 2 Is Out!

Season 3 Episode 2 released last week, and this time the dads are taking on the cinematic classic - American Graffiti. The dads had differing opinions on the film, and let’s just say Mateo wasn’t a fan. Listen in with the links below.

What’s Next?

Episode 3 drops next Tuesday, September 10th. Here’s a sneak peak of the dads taking on TV in the 1960s.

An American Graffiti Playlist

One thing the dads all agreed on when we discussed American Graffiti, at least I think we did, was that the movie had an amazing soundtrack. Give our American Graffiti playlist a listen and see if you agree.
