The Lede
As I sat down to write this email, it occurred to me that being the father of young (or youngish) children is a lot like being a spy who has been captured by the enemy. There are a lot of questions—some you can’t answer, some you won’t answer, and some you hope you don’t get asked. The people asking the questions are relentless. They constantly try to catch you in inconsistencies, and a large number of the questions are nothing more than poorly disguised traps. Your captors might even subject you to severe torture, and sleep deprivation is just part of the territory you eventually get used to.
Or maybe it’s just because I watched the movie Bridge of Spies and read the book it was based on in preparation for our upcoming first episode on the 1960s. Who’s to say?

What’s Happenin’ in 1960?
We aren’t going to make our way through the story of the 1960s strictly chronologically. The second episode focuses on the movie American Graffiti, a movie released in 1973 about the year 1962, and we don’t even get to the 1960 Presidential election until episode 4.
Still, there were a lot of things going on in 1960 that are worth checking out. Some of my favorites that touch on 1960 are:
